Special Projects

July 31, 2021 By Bob Spangler

Sometimes a very special project comes along. We consider a Memorial Project as a special project and below are two recently completed. We worked closely with the families to create a unique piece in memory of a loved one and also is a gift to the public.

One is a table and two chairs to be housed in the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in the upper gallery. They become a place for the art viewers to sit, relax and read about the current show in the gallery.

The other project is a contemporary outdoor bench at the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum. Also a place to relax, remember and in honor of a dedicated docent at the Historical Museum.

I designed this chair in 1982 and inspired by a Mi I designed this chair in 1982 and inspired by a Ming Dynasty chair. It is still one of my favorite chairs both to build and look at. It seems that every time I make one or a set I tweak this or that in the process. It uses steam bending, now the CNC machine , pattern shaping, hand carving of the handholds and a very tricky glue up.
When asked to make a round 50” dia pedestal table When asked to make a round 50” dia pedestal table — with a fold out “Butterfly” leaf I thought it impossible. But after some thought and several CAD drawings I came up with this version of a pedestal table and it has the fold out self storing leaf. Hitting 6 points in space at the top of the legs to mount the framework that houses the fold out leaf is a challenge.
