Special Projects

July 31, 2021 By Bob Spangler

Sometimes a very special project comes along. We consider a Memorial Project as a special project and below are two recently completed. We worked closely with the families to create a unique piece in memory of a loved one and also is a gift to the public.

One is a table and two chairs to be housed in the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in the upper gallery. They become a place for the art viewers to sit, relax and read about the current show in the gallery.

The other project is a contemporary outdoor bench at the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum. Also a place to relax, remember and in honor of a dedicated docent at the Historical Museum.

Process

December 26, 2020 By Bob Spangler

Work in process is exciting and there are many aspects till the finished piece. Below is a snapshot of two months following through with 8 chairs and a table.

After designs and meetings with clients it all begins with selecting wood. Here at Goby Walnut in Portland, one of our suppliers.
Finally back at the shop the work will begin.

Studio Chair

We just finished three new chairs. One led to another and the Studio Chair is the second in the series. It is very comfortable and minimal in nature, all solid wood with a back that reminds one of a music sheet and with a contoured seat.

1 x 1

The third chair was a challenge to make a chair entirely from 1″ x 1″ material. There are five identical pieces that make all the pieces for the chair with the spaces between the seat and back pieces also being 1″ wide.

Just Delivered

July 20, 2017 By Bob Spangler

These two unique pieces were just delivered from our shop on the same day. The cabinet was made as a custom piece for an entry way by Birgit Josenhans using salvaged Western Maple and she embedded rocks and other “treasures” provided by the client in the top.

The round Cherry and Maple Table was also a custom order piece.  34″ in diameter with 5 sets of “V” legs. The “V” leg idea is from our good friend Art Grice in another table we built for him earlier.

I designed this chair in 1982 and inspired by a Mi I designed this chair in 1982 and inspired by a Ming Dynasty chair. It is still one of my favorite chairs both to build and look at. It seems that every time I make one or a set I tweak this or that in the process. It uses steam bending, now the CNC machine , pattern shaping, hand carving of the handholds and a very tricky glue up.
When asked to make a round 50” dia pedestal tabl When asked to make a round 50” dia pedestal table — with a fold out “Butterfly” leaf I thought it impossible. But after some thought and several CAD drawings I came up with this version of a pedestal table and it has the fold out self storing leaf. Hitting 6 points in space at the top of the legs to mount the framework that houses the fold out leaf is a challenge.
